Brent Backes is group vice president and general counsel for DCP Midstream. His responsibilities include executive management of legal, regulatory, government affairs, right-of-way, internal audit, enterprise risk management and corporate development.
Brent joined DCP in 1998. Prior to that, he was an attorney with LeBoeuf, Lamb, Green & MacRae LLP from 1993 to 1998 focusing on mergers and acquisitions and regulatory matters in the energy industry. He began his career in 1987 with Kelly Stansfield & O’Donnell as an associate attorney.
Brent is a native of Minot, N.D. He serves on the Executive Board and as corporate secretary of the Colorado Oil and Gas Association and on the Executive Board of the Colorado Ballet and is Co-Chair of the Finance Committee. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business management and a juris doctorate with distinction from the University of North Dakota. He is a member of the Denver Bar Association, Colorado Bar Association, American Bar Association, Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation, Colorado Oil and Gas Association and American Corporate Counsel Association.
Brent and his wife, Melanie, have three daughters and a son. They live in Denver, Colorado.
